KZ compared with direct-drive classes

Downshift deliberately
The driver should not treat the gear lever as an afterthought. Each downshift needs to suit the speed of the kart and the engine's operating range. Rapid, poorly timed shifts can make the rear axle skip or lock.
The best shift point is not identical at every corner. A slow hairpin may require a lower gear for acceleration, while a fast bend may reward carrying speed in a higher gear and avoiding an unnecessary shift.

KZ engines can deliver a sharp hit of power when they enter the effective part of the rev range. Opening the throttle too early can spin the inside rear tire or push the kart wide. - Gearing: The front and rear sprockets determine the overall gearing. The aim is to use the available power without running out of revs too early or making the engine struggle out of corners.
- Engine condition: Carburetor settings, exhaust condition, cooling and general maintenance affect power delivery and reliability.
- Shift mechanism: The gear lever and selector must operate cleanly. A damaged or poorly adjusted mechanism can cause missed shifts.

Gear selection and chassis setup cannot be separated. A lower gear may improve exit acceleration but increase wheelspin. A chassis that does not release the rear tire correctly can make that problem worse, even when the gearing is correct.

KZ should be approached as a competition class, not as a casual first step into karting. Before driving one, a newcomer should be comfortable with braking, cornering, track etiquette and recovery from slides in a slower kart.

Used equipment can also hide expensive wear, especially in the gearbox, crankshaft, clutch and braking system.
